- said:
-
- 1. FullWrite Professional has been completed*. They are working
- on removing the known and pin-pointed bugs in the program.
- 2. Shipment is targeted at the end of November*. We should see it
- in the beginning of December.
- 3. Charter Subscribers: if you have already paid for FullWrite and
- think that this is a scam, you CAN get a REFUND directly
- from Ann Arbor Softworks. They admit that they have made

- I am keeping my faith in them.

- I've been noticing that some of my older diskettes work on some SE's
- and not others. In two cases disks that were initialized on the old
- 400k drives when inserted in my SE didn't work at all, but were savable
- with MacZap. MacZap indicated that the allocation tables had been
- trashed. However, this same diskette worked perfectly well on another's
- SE. More recently, a file on a diskette that worked on my SE and

- I posted the following request to another group (comp.lsi) about porting
- IC layout software to the Mac II, and received a couple of responses
- indicating that either Apple or Berkeley had already ported MAGIC to a
- II running Beta A/UX (I'd actually prefer to stay with the Mac OS, as
- I'd like the port to have a full Mac user interface, but I'll take what
- I can get). Can anyone confirm or deny this, and if true, I'd love to
- get a copy. Also, does anyone on this group have any
- comments/experience on this subject?
-
- : I'm interested in bringing up an IC layout package on
- : a new hardware platform we've just received (a Mac II),
- : however the in-house software we use for most circuit
- : layout may be too large to run efficiently on the Mac.
- : The package must support at least 20 mask layers, have
- : assignable colors, be able to handle reasonably large
- : databases, support EBES output, and preferably have
- : a symbolic editing mode (although I'd be willing to
- : sacrifice this if all other features were supported).
- :
- : I understand that MAGIC is something of a standard on the
- : outside world (please correct me if I'm wrong), and am
- : wondering how I can acquire the source code and documentation
- : to the program. Is the source public domain (I expect to do
- : a lot of re-coding to adequately support the Mac user
- : interface)? Is it small enough to be e-mailed? Are
- : there other layout packages available which may be
- : more suitable?
- :
- : Please excuse my ignorance on this subject, as I've not

-
- This may give you sweaty palms the next time you open your Mac II case.
- One of our local Apple dealers says that, at the factory service
- training sessions, he was told that the Mac II motherboard was
- *extremely* sensitive to damage from electrostatic discharge (ESD). Now
- many of us already know that CMOS IC's can be damaged by ESD, and take
- routine precautions when handling them. The service training
- instructors apparently are stressing this in a big way: they claim that
- ESD control is especially important around the Mac II because it
- contains VLSI chips with unprecedentedly high gate densities (for a PC).
- To underline this statement, they told the trainees that damage could
- be caused by waving a charged piece of material (eg. plastic film) over
- the board, or (if you wear the proper shirt material) by raising your
- arm.
-
- Apparently, some ESD-induced damage is not immediately evident. One
- common damage mode involves an increase in gate leakage current - the
- chips function properly until the leakage eventually deteriorates into a
- catastrophic failure. The service instructors said that in in a Mac II,
- such damage is undetectable at first, but may show up four months later
- in erratic program behavior and data loss, possibly culminating in
- machine crashes and a bill for a new motherboard. I had heard about
- such incipient ESD damage, but never took it very seriously until now.
-
- What to make of this? Well, now that we finally have open Macs there
- are going to be a lot of people out there gleefully popping in boards
- and hard disks, and most of these folks are not well trained in ESD
- precautions. If the boards are as hyper-fragile as the above story
- suggests, then there are going to be a lot of IIs coming down with
- degenerative chip disease, and a lot of unhappy owners. Apple must know
- that, so perhaps the service instructors were being a bit over-dramatic.
-
-
- But it makes sense to play it safe. Most readers of this group are
- likely to be familiar with ESD precautions, but here are some tips for
- those few who may not be. With the cover in place and the machine
- properly grounded, it is reasonably well protected. You might consider
- a grounding floor mat, etc. if there are a lot of static snaps from
- office carpeting and chairs. If and when you go inside the case, it is
- wise to have the machine grounded (plugged into a grounded outlet), to
- put it on a conducting grounded surface, and to keep a grounding strap
- on your body (I run a wire with alligator clips from my metal wristwatch
- band to the chassis). Move around as little as possible while you are
- installing boards, disk drives or accessories and handle them only as
- much as needed. Finally, I seem to remember that polyester clothing is
- more ESD prone than cotton.

- Hi,
- The authors and their fonts are:
-
- Boston II: The one that started it all off, and still the best. The
- author is Charles Maurer, and his address is:
-
- Charles E. Maurer
- 31 Forsyth Avenue South
- Hamilton, Ontario L8S 2A4
- Canada
-
- and the price is $10.50, american. I dunno the canadian price...
-
- DON'T be fooled by the font Lachine, by Andrew Welch! It's a _very
- very_ poor copy of Boston II (so obvious a copy it's really kind of sad
- that Andrew expects people to pay him for it...) and it isn't as good.
-
-
- Beverly Hills: The author and his address:
-
- Alan D. Hayman
- 1425 S. Doheny Dr.,
- Los Angeles, CA 90035
-
- It's a pretty nice update of New York, but its roots are far too
- obvious. Much better to use:
-
-
- Clairvaux 2.2: By:
-
- J.W. Leedom
- P.O. Box 9714
- Hollins College
- Roanoke, VA 24020
-
- It's also a pretty obvious copy of New York, but it is very nice, and
- when printed really stands as its own font. The funny thing about this
- font is that it doesn't look very good on the screen! I compared it to
- Boston II in a Write document, and thought "well, still no competition
- for good old Boston II", until I printed it out! Very nice.
- Unfortunately, the 20 point is nowhere near as nice as the 24 point
- (for printing Best quality for (respectively) 10 and 12 point). If you
- do order it, complain bitterly about this.
-
- Both Beverly Hills and Clairvaux are $10.

- Well, some pointers on how to be good.
-
- * Do not assume 24 bit addressing. Do not stuff anything into the
- topmost byte of a handle
-
- * Do not used 68000 priviledge instructions. A/UX Toolbox applications
- run in user mode,
-
- * Do not directly address hardware.
-
- * Do not use low memory globals if at all possible.
-
- Of course, many of these "restrictions" are actually good Macintosh
- programming practices. In general, do not make a lot of assumptions
- about the current Macintosh programming model as it is subject to
- change, e.g. A/UX toolbox access is a modification on the Macintosh
- programming model. Applications that make assumptions about the
- programming model (i.e. a lot of them) will break.

- The default LDEF (LDEF 0) will only display text lists. If you want to
- display other things, or even more nicely formatted text, you have to
- write your own LDEF. Read the section on this in IM4. It's painless:
- you have only four messages to interpret (init, draw, invert and close),

-
- The only thing you may have to be careful of if you're displaying big
- PICTs is that there is an overall 32K limit on the amount of data stored
- in the data handle of any given list. You can of course get around this
- by storing the resource # of the PICT or a handle to it instead of the

-
- Now, a related question: Why, when you select a cell in a two-

- We are an Apple VAR and are marketing an Industrialized version of the
- MAC II called the AI 90. While we were developing the AI 90 package we
- had a number of MAC II's taken apart. The mother boards were handled
- extensively (and I might say carelessly) while we were trying out
- various concepts. This was in the summer when static is less of an
- issue, but we have experienced no problems with these initial units.
- They are now used for development in house.
-
- People should *always* follow good ESD practice when handling any
- computer (our AI 90 production people do!), but we have found the MAC II
- mother boards to be fairly robust.

- Try: Boot without multifinder active (hold the command key down while
- booting) Open the control panel while holding down shift/option/command
- in order to zero the PRAM. Reset things the way you want them (I'd suggest less
- than 750K of cache in your case :-)

- Some months ago I heard rumours about UUCP implementations for the VOZ
- CP :-) and also for the Mac. However, the source newsgroups are too
- expensive to get here, and there does not seem to have been any mention
- anywhere else. I did see some mention of "uupc" - was that it? Was there
- a Mac version?
-
- Anyway, I would very much like a UUCP for the Mac. Can anyone clue me in
- and point me in the right direction?
-
- Post if you want, but please also reply by mail, as by my news access
- will be erratic over the next month.
-
- Thanks! Robert

- This bit me too, so the answer might be of general interest:
-
- Take or make a spare startup disk, borrow a Mac and ResEdit, open the
- System file, and delete the resource of type CACH (you could also delete
- INIT 35, or whatever it is). When you boot with this disk, you won't
- lose any memory to the RAM disk, and you can use the Control Panel to
- set the memory back down again.
-
- If you're using an older Mac, you can just install a newer Control Panel
- (and the General cdev, if you're going to get real recent) on an older
- System disk and avoid the ResEdit step.

- Perhaps this is a good time for a new system software request!
-
- With all of the INITs, CDEVs, ..., ..., ..., my System Folder is started
- to get CROWDED. Why can't we start having subfolders to (optionally)
- house these sort of things? Such as: Init Folder, CDEV Folder, ...
-
- It can't bee too hard to do. It might be confusing for neophytes, but if
- it's optional, they won't have to worry about it.

- I am looking for a utility which will allow me to expand tabs in a

- I thought the whole idea behind having the new update called "System
- Software 5.0" was to avoid the confusion with version numbers and
- EVERYTHING would have the *same* number. However, we still have System
- 4.2, Finder 6.0, MultiFinder 1.0, etc. How are we different from
- before? Not only that, but *nothing* in the set is version 5.0! Might
- as well have called it System Software 42.0.
